Weaning is always one of the most telling times of year — it’s when you really see how the season’s joining and calving decisions have paid off. This year’s muster brought in a strong, even line of calves, with weights and temperament both reflecting the work that’s gone into the herd over the past few seasons.
Average weaning weights were up on last year across both the bull and heifer calves, and pleasingly the spread was tighter — fewer stragglers, more consistency from top to bottom. That’s exactly what we’re aiming for as the herd matures and the genetics we’ve been selecting for start to compound.
A handful of calves stood out immediately and have already been earmarked for closer assessment as future sale or retained genetics — we’ll have more on a few of these in coming updates as they develop.
As always, weaning is also a chance to reassess the cow herd itself. Cows that reared a strong, well-grown calf again this year continue to prove their place in the program — and a few of this year’s standouts will be added to the Elite Females page shortly.
